|EES Program (Education For Environmental Solution). EES program is characterized by exploration of the local community and natural surroundings, hand on experiences of environmental discovery and problem solving to develop ability, the way of thinking, logic, and creativity of Teenager/student K12 and community. This program is not an extra subject for teachers, pupils and local community to study, but it is a way for teachers, Teenager/student K12 and local community to colaborate and approach the existing school curriculum with the local environment problems and local wisdom as a "door to enter the real world-environmental problemĒ to increase pupils and local community understanding of environment; stimulate critical and creative thinking; develop ability to make informed decisions on environmental issues; and to take responsible action on behalf of the environment.
Our years of working with different groups of schools, We saw that the EES Program give the opportunity to:
Find out differences and discrepancies between real life situation and information/theory given at school
Learn about life which is not taught at school
See the interconnection and overlapping between one subject to another
Find out the benefit and how to make use of the theory taught at school in real life
Learn critical thinking by addressing problems in real life, analysing and look for solutions
Learn working as team or community
Teachers are encouraged to find answers or to respond on the discrepancies between theory/text book information and real life. Teachers may need to alter and/or correct the information on the book
A new situation where teachers are expected to learn together with the pupils to access and address new information, deal with differences of opinion. It requires teachers to learn new
skills to accommodate active learning
However, our endeavor to introduce EES Program is not without problems. We were confronted by:
a. The dense curriculum made EES harder to be integrated.
b. Learning-teaching process at schools still focus in achieve good grade and pass the national exam.
c. Teachers havenít been able to connect between the learning process and curriculum materials with their local conditions.
d. Teachers canít be a good facilitator, change pupils from object into subject in learning process.
e. Pupilís learning process focus more on the hard skills (memorization and hand skills) than soft skills (Thinking skills).
f. Some teachers are hesitant to change to more active learning and see it as only adding extra burden.
g. Some teachers are not well equipped to address new situation/information which is not in the text book.
It is a great challenge for us to encourage and collaborate (local community and teachers) to using their creativity to explore local potentials (local environmental problems) to be used as local sources, to participate in decision making and being part for giving environmental solutions, both locally and globally, which promotes a more equitable and sustainable world.
For 2011 we will implementation EES program at Wonosalam district. The Aim is to secure the water springs of the Brantas River upstream (Wonoslam Distric) in East Java in order to protect biodiversity and improve the water supply for Brantas River. The springs in the targeted regions are the sources for mainly Brantas and Surabaya River that run through most of east Java and are used not only as drinking water source but also for irrigation and hydro-electric power by approximately 17 million people. In order to achieve integrated Brantas River management, the project focuses on the collaboration of all the stakeholders in joint actions, increasing community awareness and involvement as well as promoting the economic benefits of sustainable use of its natural resources.
